Medical practices that have implemented an electronic health record system report better financial performance than those that have not, according to the Medical Group Management Association’s newly released “Electronic Health Records Impacts on Revenue, Costs, and Staffing: 2010 Report Based on 2009 Data.”

To Wash or Not to Wash? Is that even a Question?

While we don’t usually talk about simple procedures such as handwashing in our daily lives- maybe this is a topic that needs more attention. The recent report in May’s Applied Nursing Research journal entitled, “Exploring the factors associated with hand hygiene compliance of nurses during routine clinical practice” has some of us in the healthcare industry shocked and dismayed. While we focus on high tech solutions to complex healthcare problems, this is one simple solution that can stave off millions of HAIs per year. You don’t need clinical decision support tools to figure this one out. A simple sign with “Employees Must Wash Hands” at every door, sink, and bathroom may just suffice.

Health IT ‘Beacon Communities’ awarded $220 million

The government has released the names of the 15 communities across the country from Maine to Hawaii that will serve as models for the broad use of healthcare information technology under a $220 million program aimed at improving care and efficiency – and creating new jobs. (more…)
