To Wash or Not to Wash? Is that even a Question?

While we don’t usually talk about simple procedures such as handwashing in our daily lives- maybe this is a topic that needs more attention. The recent report in May’s Applied Nursing Research journal entitled, “Exploring the factors associated with hand hygiene compliance of nurses during routine clinical practice” has some of us in the healthcare industry shocked and dismayed. While we focus on high tech solutions to complex healthcare problems, this is one simple solution that can stave off millions of HAIs per year. You don’t need clinical decision support tools to figure this one out. A simple sign with “Employees Must Wash Hands” at every door, sink, and bathroom may just suffice.
